Our kitchen of 14 years, with its horrid country wallpaper, shitty contractor’s grade cabinets and formica counters, is no more.

First pics show before, with horrible orange cabinets, formica counters and ancient linoleum floor. The half wall over the bar has been removed, and the closet/pantry, which was backed by an angled wall in the living room, has been removed and squared off to allow for a full-length cabinet in its place. Fur downs (or soffits or whatever they’re called) have also been removed so new cabinets will go to the ceiling. They’ve been working on rewiring all the outlets, adding some more, and preparing for can lights in the ceiling. Popcorn will be removed from the ceiling, and they should be painting by the end of next week (we still have to pick the color). Custom cabinets go in at the end of the month, then floor (probably tile) and new appliances. We’re hoping it will be wrapped up by the start of December so Mrs. Ttyymmnn can do her holiday baking.

oh wow. those last pictures are unbelievably intimidating. good luck! What are you doing for counters btw? I just moved into a place with a smaller kitchen but everything is brand new, including fresh granite counters which make it feel really luxurious.

The only thing intimidating about this project is the cost. I’m sitting here at my desk while other people, who actually know what they are doing, are doing all the work. Counters will be manufactured stone. Cabinets are white with Shaker doors and slab drawers.

Man, that’s a brave project. I so badly want to do this to our kitchen, we have very similar cabinets and counters, plus a layout that I don’t like, but they function and that’s all I need for now. Maybe someday, when the kids are older and there’s extra money.

Well, as I said to somebody else, the bravest thing I’m doing is paying for this. Other people are doing the work. This is WAY beyond my skill set. And the money is coming from my wife’s inheritance. Without that, we wouldn’t be doing this.

Still a big deal, having someone rip your house up.

True. Our dining area is now the living room.

We just finished tearing out old floors to get to the subfloor so we can put tile down now. My entire house is being re-done, with most of the work the kitchen and making the unfinished basement into the master suite.

Man, brick and wood. I’m in the world of timber framing with vinyl siding and concrete slabs. Are you doing the work yourself, or have your hired somebody? This is far beyond my skill set, so I’ve got somebody doing it for me.

Is Lowes doing it for you? Just thought I’d ask cause I work there and am somewhat familiar with it.

No. I’ve hired a guy. A one-handed guy, actually. He’s got an assistant, but he works harder than many two-handed people I know. I got all my appliances from Lowe’s, though. They have the best warranty price out there. Sears wants $800 to warranty a refrigerator. LOL.

My dad knows basic carpentry enough to tear things apart and usually put it back together. We have an electrician and better carpenter who help out. The electrician has his own key since he pops over between bigger jobs and does a couple outlets or whatnot. Most of the house needs wiring replaced. We’ve had painters in the past couple days texturing the ceiling. Have a guy coming to refinish the original wood floor in the rest of the house. So in short, we are doing what we can but getting plenty of help as needed.

We thought about trying it that way, but it was just easier (though more expensive) to have one guy take care of everything. He is here every day, works for 6 hours nonstop, then cleans up every day when he is done. He keeps his junk trailer in our garage so we don’t have piles of construction debris in our driveway. I like the way this guy works.

Good choice (I’m actually an appliance salesman, so there maybe some bias) .I just work a lot with the remodeling and cabinet sales dept. What brand appliances did you get?

Not real granite. Granite chips and stains.

We did our homework and then some. Finding a counter depth fridge was a nightmare, since we really didn’t want ice/water in the door, but needed a decent ice maker in the freezer. It became an exercise in compromises. I really don’t like the French door style, but that’s pretty much all that’s out there. We didn’t want a side-by-side. And I would rather have more fridge space and less freezer space, since I have a freezer in the garage. As it is, I’m getting .1 sq ft of space increase over my old Sears fridge. The old fridge will live in the garage next to the freezer, so I have room to keep the stuff that doesn’t fit in the new fridge. And beer.

Good luck with that project. Last fall we redid our kitchen. The week or so that things were torn apart sucked, but it is so worth it when it’s done. We went from 70's vintage cabinets that didn’t close and carpet on the floor to nice cabinets and drawers with soft close, a nice solid countertop and laminate flooring. I’ve still got some trim and stuff to finish, but what good is a house if you don’t have something that you’re supposed to be finishing.

One week without a kitchen? We’ll be as many as 5-7 weeks without a kitchen. Cooking dinner in the living room sucks, and I don’t want to eat out too much.

Me and a buddy did the tear out and hung some new drywall on a Saturday. I finished the tear out myself on Monday/Tuesday the following week, then while the plumber was in fixing stuff on Wednesday the cabinet installer did the drywall finishing. They installed the cabinets by the end of that week and the following week the flooring was installed. So more like 2 weeks without a kitchen.
